Iron Roost Chalkboard Wall
In a previous post, we shared our process for hanging menu boards at Iron Roost, a local waffle shop. We had the privilege of working with them again on a temporary chalkboard wall.
When you first enter Iron Roost you arewelcomed with a refrigerator stocked with a variety of to-go baked goods. Before Iron Roost offered these to go items, you were welcomed by a chalkboard wall listing specials, drinks, soups, other interesting events, or information. Most of this content would change daily or weekly, but there was also more permanent content such as a "Please order at the counter" section. The content that changed often needed a frame and header so Iron Roost could write in the specials, but the more permanent content could be illustrative and decorative. The goals of the new designs were to better utilize the wall space and make the wall feel more cohesive with the hanging menus we did for them previously.
THE PROCESS
The process didn't change much from the previous menu boards we did for them. Iron Roost had an idea of the different sections they wanted, so we sketched a few iterations of each section to see what did and didn't work. The biggest challenge for this wall was that there were very specific measurements for each section of the wall. For the hanging menu boards, each board was separate so drawing in guides was a bit easier. For the wall, everything was done on-site on one large wall so adding all the guides and measurements was a big part of the project.
Because this was done on-site, we had a limited time to finish the wall. Luckily, Iron Roost was closed for the week to get ready for the Summer rush. This worked out great because it allowed us to work without being in the way of any customers. It also kept us from getting any chalk dust in their delicious waffles!
We're really happy with how the final wall turned out. Our favorite section is the Local Partners section. It showcases all the local businesses and farms Iron Roost partners with through an illustrative infographic.
Below, we created a time-lapse video that shows our process for drawing the wall and the final designs.
Enjoy!
