CLIENT BACKGROUND

Arlington Heights Park District needed an updated printed map to give their residents. Their old map was outdated, off-brand, and didn't easily communicate the facilities and parks they provided to the community.

PROJECT GOALS

  • Update map visuals following AHPDs color palette, typography, and other visuals for it to feel more on brand and friendly

  • Redesign and organize key and icon hierarchy in a more logical manner

  • Update all map logistics (roads, streets, etc.) to be accurate

  • Develop a solution to feature main park facilities, activities offered with those facilities, and third-party partner facilities

  • Create two-color and four-color versions of the map in both letter and tabloid sizes

  • Redesign an activity matrix to work with the map

Defining Hierarchy

To bring more of a spotlight to AHPD’s main facilities, monoline icons were created to represent each. AHPD also wanted to feature the most popular activities at each facility, so we devised a way to incorporate an “activity ring” for each icon, including a smaller icon of the featured activities. From there, programming partners were added, with landmarks and pints of interest added as a third level of information. The main facilities and programming partners included more details in an accompanying matrix printed on the back of the map.

The facility icons were so successful on the map that the organization ended up integrating them throughout the park district in signage and banners.

MATRIX

Each version of the map has a matrix that followed detailing each facility. The matrix includes what sports or activities are at each location and if registration, washrooms, and handicap-accessible activities are available.
